Defending champions LIONSXII fell to defeat in their opening match of the 2014 Malaysia Super League campaign after losing 1-0 to Pahang.
Following a goalless first half in Friday’s match at the Darulmakmur Stadium, which also doubled as the Charity Shield clash, Tok Gajah went on to claim all three points after Argentinean striker Matias Conti netted the only goal of the game in the 57th minute – netting on the rebound after opposition goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud had made a fine save to deny Abdul Malik Mat Ariff in a one-on-one situation.
Perennial challengers Selangor opened their season with victory a day later after cruising to a 2-0 triumph over T-Team at the MBPJ Stadium.
New signing Paulo Rangel broke the deadlock five minutes after the hour mark when he nodded home from six yards after the opposition defence failed to clear their lines, before he wrapped up the three points for the Red Giants seven minutes later when he met Abdul Hadi Yahya’s right-wing cross with a bullet header into the back of the net.
Big-spending Johor Darul Ta’zim were also winners on Saturday after beating Perak 2-0 at home.
Amri Yahyah put Harimau Selatan ahead in the 38th minute when met Mahalli Jasuli’s corner at the near post and sent a terrific header into the back of the net, but they were struggled to find a second as the visitors provided plenty of resistance.
However, Perak were dealt a real blow in the 85th minute when Raffi Nagoorgani was sent off and three minutes later, JDT killed off the contest after Safiq Rahim received the ball from Hariss Harun and slid a visionary through-pass to Luciano Figueroa, who coolly slotted into the bottom corner.
2012 champions Kelantan came from a goal down to beat Sime Darby 2-1 at the Sultan Mohammad IV Stadium.
Fadzli Saari had given the visitors an eighth-minute lead, but that was cancelled out on the hour mark when Lebanon international Mohammed Ghaddar equalised for the Red Warriors.
And with nine minutes on the clock, Ghaddar struck once more to hand the three points to Kelantan.
ATM overcame a tricky test against newly-promoted Sarawak as they recorded a 2-0 win thanks to first-half goals from Marlon Alex James and D. Christie Jayaseelan.
Finally, PKNS FC threw away a lead and were beaten 2-1 by Terengganu at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium.
The visitors edged ahead in the 19th minute thanks to a strike by Indonesia international Hamka Hamzah but Mamadou Barry equalised for the Turtles four minutes later, before the Guinean popped up again in the 67th minute to net the winner.
