Pahang boot LIONSXII out of Malaysia FA Cup

Pahang ended LIONSXII’s hopes of winning the Malaysia FA Cup this season after eliminating them in the second round with a 2-1 victory at the Jalan Besar Stadium.

Goals from Hafiz Kamal and Azidan Sairudin proved enough to hand Tok Gajah the win over Fandi Ahmad’s charges, who managed a late consolation through Safuwan Baharudin.

Having cruised to a 3-0 win over Premier League outfit DRB-Hicom in the first round, the LIONSXII were expected to face a much tougher test against the reigning Malaysia Cup champions, who had beaten them 1-0 in the Super League opener just two weeks ago.

And following a goalless first half, it was Pahang who took the lead six minutes after the break when Hafiz Kamal, lining up a freekick after Azidan had been fouled on the edge of the box, proceeded to curl a sublime left-footed effort over the wall and into the bottom corner.

Just four minutes later, the visitors doubled their tally with another long-range strike; Azidan getting in on the act with a fine strike past Izwan Mahbud after good play by Matias Conti in the build-up.

The LIONSXII did pull one back in the 86th minute when Safuwan Baharudin scored with a blistering 30-yard freekick, but they were unable to find the equaliser as Tok Gajah held on to advance to the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Saturday’s other game at the Larkin Stadium was abandoned at halftime with Johor Darul Ta’zim leading T-Team 2-1.

A Luciano Figueroa double had handed Harimau Selatan a commanding lead inside the opening 20 minutes, but Marzuki Yusof pulled one back for T-Team a minute before the half-hour mark.

However, T-Team then refused to come out for the second half due to safety reasons, with some reporting there was an altercation between officials from both sides during the break.

The Football Association of Malaysia will make a decision on whether or not to replay the match or retain the result.
