Albirex Niigata (S) stretched their unbeaten run in the S.League to three games on Friday after overcoming a one-goal deficit to beat Tanjong Pagar United 2-1 at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
Following a goalless first half at the Jalan Besar Stadium, it was the Jaguars who took the lead a minute before the hour mark thanks to an own-goal from Soichiro Tanaka; the defender getting into a mix-up with goalkeeper Kenjiro Ogino and heading Masrewan Masturi’s dangerous cross into his own net.
However, Albirex responded well and equalised in the 77th minute when Shuhei Hotta climbed highest at the near post to meet Kazuya Okazaki’s corner, and proceeded to send a bullet header into the back of the net.
Tatsuyuki Okuyama’s charges then had a couple of excellent chances to take the lead shortly after; Okazaki unleashing a blistering drive that was pushed onto the post by Aurelien Herisson, before Hotta could only head over after meeting another precise set-piece delivery.
But seven minutes from time, they duly went on to claim the three points after Ogino’s clearance was flicked on by Taiyo Nishida into the path of substitute Kazuki Sakamoto, who coolly sent an excellent volley looping over Herisson and into the back of the net.
The result was enough to send Albirex up to fourth spot on the table, while the Jaguars, who have claimed just six points from their opening six games, remain third from bottom.
