The race for promotion in the Malaysia Premier League heated up on Friday evening as leaders PDRM beat Penang 2-1 in a top-of-the-table clash.
Following a goalless first half at the Bandaraya Stadium, Charles Souza Chad broke the deadlock for the visitors in the 53rd minute but Penang responded through a Lee Kil-hoon effort eight minutes after the hour mark.
But in injury-time, and just after missing a penalty, Maldives international Ali Ashfaq made amends by netting with an emphatic effort to claim all three points for PDRM, who remain unbeaten after 14 games of the season.
Meanwhile, the Panthers defeat means they have slipped to third on the table after FELDA United overtook them with a sixth straight victory by beating Sabah 2-1 at the Majlis Perbandaran Selayang Stadium.
Although Indra Putra Mahayuddin fired the hosts ahead after 17 minutes, Sabah responded five minutes into the second half when Andrezinho netted his second goal in as many games.
However, FELDA reclaimed the lead in the 68th minute when Ndumba Makeche found the back of the net and were able to see out the remainder of the game to claim the win.
Another one of the Premier League’s in-form teams – Negeri Sembilan – stretched their winning run to five matches after seeing off bottom side PBAPP 2-0 at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium.
Debutant Ivan Babic handed V. Sundramoorthy’s charges the lead just before the break when he latched onto a long ball and cut inside, before unleashing a 25-yard rocket into the top corner.
And in the 51st minute, the contest was effectively ended as Negeri Sembilan doubled their tally after Babic hit the byline before cutting a cross back to Kim Jin-ryong, who escaped his marker and made no mistake from close range.
Over at the Darul Aman Stadium, Kedah were left stunned after falling to a shock 2-0 loss to DRB-Hicom, who picked up only their fourth win of the campaign in the process.
Khairul Naim Mahyuddin netted the opener six minutes before the half-hour mark, and the victory was secured in the 68th minute when Fakhrullah Rosli struck a second for the visitors.
Finally, Friday’s early kick-off saw Perlis remain second from bottom following a 1-1 draw at SPA FC.
Farizal Rozali fired the visitors into the lead four minutes before the interval, although SPA were able to pull level six minutes from time as Alen Guc struck to earn them a share of the spoils.
Both teams did finish the game with ten men as Farizal was shown a straight red in the 86th minute, before SPA’s Asyidi Dil Ashar Yusof followed him a minute later for a second bookable offence.
