Arema Cronus moved top of the Western zone of the Indonesia Super League on Tuesday after claiming a 1-0 win over title rivals Semen Padang.
Following a goalless first half at the Haji Agus Salim Stadium, both sides were reduced to ten men in the 54th minute when Irsyad Maulana and Hendra Bayauw were both handed their marching orders.
But three minutes later, it was Arema who broke the deadlock when Thierry Gathuessi headed home a freekick from Ahmad Bustomi, which ultimately proved enough for the three points.
The win was enough to take Arema top of the table with a two-point lead over Persib Bandung, with a game in hand.
Meanwhile, Persija Jakarta climbed two spots up to third following a 1-0 triumph over Gresik United at the Gelora Bung Karno.
The hosts edged ahead six minutes after the hour mark when Victor Pae found the back of the net, before any hopes of a Gresik comeback were effectively ended when they had Shohei Matsunaga sent off for a second bookable offence in the 71st minute.
