Ceres see off Tatung to edge closer to President’s Cup finals

Philippine outfit Ceres-La Salle moved one step closer to the final stage of the 2014 AFC President’s Cup on Thursday after beating Tatung 2-0 at the Panaad Stadium.

The Group B hosts, who began their campaign on Tuesday with a creditable 2-2 draw against Korea DPR side Rimyongsu, were looking to pick up their first win against their Chinese Taipei opponents.

And it was them who took the lead after 17 minutes when Carli de Murga’s pinpoint freekick found Patrick Reichelt, who produced a terrific first-time volley to send the ball into the back of the net.

But despite dominating proceedings, Ceres were unable to make sure of the victory until two minutes from time; Juan Luis Guirado heading past Hsu Jen-Feng from close range to wrap up the three points.

In Thursday’s other game, Rimyongsu and HTTU Asgabat played out a 1-1 draw which means Ceres only need to avoid defeat in their final game on Saturday to book their spot in the finals, which will take place in September.

It looked as though Asgabat were headed from victory after Suleyman Muhadow fired them ahead with just ten minutes remaining, but only a minute later, Ri Hyok-chol struck to earn the North Koreans a share of the spoils.
