Selangor moved five points clear at the top of the Malaysia Super League on Saturday after claiming a 1-0 win over Sime Darby at the Shah Alam Stadium.
The winner came in the 38th minute when Paulo Rangel fired home his 11th goal of the campaign from the penalty spot, after Andik Vermansyah had been brought down inside the area by a clumsy challenge from Yosri Derma Raju.
Coupled with second-placed Pahang’s 2-2 draw with Johor Darul Ta’zim on Friday evening, the result allowed the Red Giants to stretch their lead at the summit with just six games left to go in the season.
Meanwhile, defending champions LIONSXII were handed a second successive defeat after beating beaten 2-1 by Terengganu at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium.
The visitors had taken the lead after just eight minutes when Shakir Hamzah ran onto Faris Ramli’s incisive pass down the left, and proceeded to float a cross for Khairul Amri to nod home at the far post.
But three minutes later, the Turtles pulled level after Zairo Anuar Zalani’s excellent corner was met by Javier Estupinan with a glancing header into the back of the net.
And nine minutes after the hour mark, Terengganu were awarded a penalty after Estupinan was tripped inside the box by Izwan Mahbud, allowing Zairo to step up and fire home the winner.
Over at the Sultan Mohammad IV Stadium, Kelantan kept alive their faint hopes of winning the title with a hard-fought 2-1 triumph over Perak.
The Red Warriors broke the deadlock after just five minutes after Brendan Gan forced his way past his opponent down the right, before whipping in a cross that was emphatically headed home by Mohamed Shawky.
And in the 77th minute, it looked as though the three points were secured after Khairul Izuan Rosli raced onto an incisive pass and skipped inside Tuah Iskandar, before coolly stroking the ball into the bottom corner.
However, the visitors did manage to pull one back seven minutes from time when Norhakim Isa was left with a simple tap-in at the far post, although Kelantan ultimately did enough to hold out for the win.
Finally, ATM claimed a much-needed three points and moved off the foot of the table with a 2-1 win over T-Team at the Majlis Perbandaran Selayang Stadium.
It was T-Team who edged ahead after 13 minutes when Patrich Wanggai latched onto a loose ball on the edge of the area and rifled a shot into the back of the net, but the hosts equalised eight minutes later after Fabrice Noel clinically drilled a 20-yard effort into the bottom corner.
And four minutes after the half-hour mark, Noel struck again to hand the Armed Forces maximum points; firing away a 25-yard shot that was fumbled over the line by opposition keeper Wan Azraei Wan Teh.
