Johor Darul Ta’zim moved two points behind Malaysia Super League leaders Selangor on Saturday after claiming a 1-0 win over their title rivals.
Following a goalless first half at the Shah Alam Stadium, the winner arrived in the 72nd minute when Luciano Figueroa netted his tenth goal of the campaign after excellent work in the build-up by Jorge Pereyra Diaz.
The defeat – which was only the Red Giants’ third of the season – means Darul Ta’zim are now a win away from overtaking them with five games left to go.
Over at the Darulmakmur Stadium, Pahang fell to a shock 4-1 defeat to Terengganu, which sees them fall to fourth on the table.
Javier Estupinan fired the Turtles ahead in the 17th minute, before Abdul Manaf Mamat made it 2-0 on the stroke of halftime.
Damion Stewart did manage to pull one back for Tok Gajah five minutes after the hour mark but Zairo Anuar Zalani added a third to wrap up the three points in injury-time, before Ashaari Shamsuddin rounded off the scoring for Terengganu at the death.
Meanwhile, defending champions LIONSXII snapped a three-game losing streak after beating ATM 2-1 at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
Khairul Amri handed them a 16th-minute lead when he headed home a Shahfiq Ghani corner, beforeZulfahmi Arifin added a second five minutes later with an emphatic finish past Syed Adney.
ATM did reduce the deficit 13 minutes from time when Rezal Zambery Yahya drilled a shot into the bottom corner, but the hosts did enough to hold out for the victory.
T-Team moved off the foot of the table and climbed up to tenth after claiming a shock 1-0 triumph over Kelantan at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium, which came courtesy of a 48th-minute winner from Nizad Ayub.
Finally, Sime Darby continued their recent rise as they climbed up to fifth with a convincing 4-1 win over PKNS FC at the Majlis Perbandaran Selayang Stadium.
After Fadzli Saari had fired the hosts ahead in the second minute, Syukur Saidin made it 2-0 in the 21st minute and Nazrul Kamaruzaman scored a minute later to hand them a healthy lead at halftime.
Shahrul Azhar Ture pulled one back for PKNS in the 52nd minute, but the win was sealed nine minutes after the hour mark when Fahrul Razi Kamaruddin added a fourth for Sime Darby.
In Friday’s only game, Perak made it three wins in their last four games after defeating Sarawak 4-1 at the Perak Stadium.
Marco Tulio’s opener put the hosts ahead in the 21st minute, before Milan Purovic notched his first goal for the club to double their lead six minutes into the second half.
Norhakim Isa then made it 3-0 in the 59th minute and although Sarawak pulled one back through a Ryan Griffiths effort three minutes after the hour mark, Tulio struck again three minutes later to seal maximum points for Perak.
