Warriors FC missed the chance to go top in the S.League on Sunday after falling to a 3-2 loss to Hougang United at the Hougang Stadium.
The Warriors had taken the lead courtesy of Miroslav Pejic’s eighth-minute opener, but the hosts equalised nine minutes later when Igor Cerina exquisitely brought down the ball before placing his shot into the back of the net.
Hougang then took the lead in the 53rd minute when Fazli Jaffar broke free and coolly slotted past Hassan Sunny, only for the visitors to hit back a minute after the hour mark when Nicolas Velez turned home a Pejic freekick with a neat first-time finish.
But the Cheetahs went on to claim all three points eight minutes later when Cerina grabbed his second of the evening, climbing highest inside the opposition area to head home an Azhar Sairudin delivery.
To make matters worse for the Warriors, they finished the game with ten men when Pejic was sent off three minutes from time after appearing to stamp on Diego Gama.
The result means that Alex Weaver’s charges remain a point behind leaders DPMM FC, who can take surge ahead at the top of the table with a win over Tampines Rovers on Tuesday.
In Sunday’s other game, Balestier Khalsa left it late to force a 1-1 draw against Albirex Niigata (S) at the Toa Payoh Stadium.
The visitors broke the deadlock in the 19th minute when Soichiro Tanaka scored with a deflected effort, but a minute from time, Ruhaizad Ismail equalised to earn the Tigers a share of the spoils.
