Hougang United continued their high-flying ways in the S.League on Friday after claiming an impressive 3-1 win over Home United at the Jalan Besar Stadium.
Despite claiming back-to-back wins over top-six rivals Albirex Niigata (S) and Warriors FC in their past two outings, the Cheetahs were expected to find things tough against a Home side that entered the clash unbeaten in their last seven games in all competition.
And it was the Protectors who took the lead after just five minutes an error from opposition defender Firman Hanif saw him head the ball backwards as his goalkeeper Fadhil Salim had come out to gather, leaving Fazrul Nawaz with a simple tap-in from two yards out.
But four minutes later, Hougang pulled level courtesy of an own-goal by Kwon Da-kyung as the South Korean – in an attempt to prevent Diego Gama from meeting Fairoz Hasan’s left-wing cross – could only deflect the ball into the bottom corner.
The designated hosts then took the lead three minutes before the hour mark when Azhar Sairudin played a one-two on the edge of the box before lofting a lovely ball over the Home defence; Geison Moura racing through and deftly sending a lob over the onrushing Shahril Jantan.
And in the 69th minute, the Cheetahs went on to seal the victory after Shunsuke Nakatake charged through the middle before finding Moura, who laid the ball off for Gama to smash home from 12 yards out.
In Friday’s other game, Tampines Rovers claimed a 1-0 win over Harimau Muda at the Pasir Gudang Corporation Stadium to move level on points with DPMM FC and Warriors FC at the top of the table.
The winner came five minutes before the break when Jozef Kaplan scored his first goal for the club since joining from Negeri Sembilan, handing the Stags a valuable three points in the process.
