The Malaysia Super League title will be decided on the final day after Selangor kept alive their hopes of winning on Saturday with a 3-0 win over Sarawak.
Needing to claim all three points at the Shah Alam Stadium to have any realistic chance of staying alive, after leaders Johor Darul Ta’zim beat Kelantan 3-0 on Friday evening, the Red Giants took the lead when Paulo Rangel struck in the 42nd minute.
A minute after the hour mark, Rangel doubled his tally to hand the hosts a commanding lead, before Ahmad Hazwan Bakri struck four minutes later to wrap up the three points for his side.
The title will now be decided next Wednesday and Selangor still have a good chance of overturning the one-point deficit given they take on bottom side PKNS FC, while JDT have a tricky tie against Sarawak.
Meanwhile, Pahang wrapped up a top-three finish after claiming a 2-1 win over PKNS at the Darulmakmur Stadium.
Following a goalless first half, Azidan Sairudin fired Tok Gajah ahead in the 49th minute before Saifulnizam Miswan made it 2-0 five minutes later.
The visitors wasted an excellent chance to get back into the contest ten minutes from time when Patrick Ronaldinho Wleh failed to convert from the spot, although they ultimately grabbed a consolation in the 88th minute courtesy of a Karlo Primorac strike.
Meanwhile, defending champions LIONSXII’s miserable form continued as they slumped to their fifth defeat in seven games – falling to a 2-0 loss at home to Perak.
The visitors took the lead in the 17th minute when the hosts’ failure to deal with a Marco Tulio freekick saw the ball eventually fall to Abdulafees Abdulsalam, who made no mistake in smashing the loose ball into the back of the net.
And five minutes after the hour mark, Perak went on to seal the win as Abdulafees turned provider, playing a deft touch to release Milan Purovic, who beat the offside trap and lashed a ferocious effort past Izwan Mahbud in off the post.
Finally, T-Team remain in the running to avoid relegation following a 1-1 draw with Sime Darby at the Majlis Perbandaran Selayang Stadium.
The Titans were initially on hand to claim all three points after Patrich Wanggai opened the scoring in the eighth minute, but Fadzli Saari headed home Farid Ramli’s corner eight minutes before the half-hour mark to leave both sides to settle for a share of the spoils.
