Home United got their Singapore League Cup campaign up and running on Tuesday with a crushing 6-1 win over Woodlands Wellington in Group C.
It was the Rams who took the lead at the Woodlands Stadium after just six minutes when Chang Jo-yoon pounced on a loose ball after his initial pass to Moon Soon-ho had been intercepted by Sirina Camara, and coolly fired into the bottom corner.
However, four minutes after the half-hour mark, Home equalised when Qiu Li found space inside the box and squared the ball to Lee Kwan-woo, who made no mistake in sending a first-time shot into the back of the net.
A minute after the restart, Qiu grabbed a goal of his own when he was left unattended outside the box and proceeded to send a stunning 25-yard drive in off the bar.
The Protectors then further extended their advantage six minutes before the hour mark after Woodlands’ failure to clear their lines at a corner saw the ball fall to Lee, who floated a precise cross back into the box for Kwon Da-kyung to head home from close range.
By now, the visitors were firmly in control of proceedings but showed no signs of letting up and added a fourth in the 70th minute; Yasir Hanapi sending a spectacular volley past Yazid Yasin after Sirina Camara’s freekick had been headed out to him.
Three minutes later, Bruno Castanheira got in on the act as he was left with a simple finish at the back post, after Masrezwan Masturi had raced onto Indra Sahdan Daud’s incisive pass and crossed the ball to the back post.
As if things were not already bad enough for the hosts, they then found themselves reduced to ten men in the 80th minute when Milos Jevtic was shown a straight red, after appearing to slap Song In-young on the back of his head.
And five minutes from time, the rout was completed when Indra curled home a freekick from the edge of the box to cap off an outstanding display from Home.
In Tuesday’s other game, Hougang United claimed the lead in Group D after cruising to a 3-0 win over Balestier Khalsa at the Toa Payoh Stadium.
Geison Moura fired the Cheetahs ahead three minutes after the half-hour mark, before Faiz Salleh netted a second two minutes from time to double their lead.
But just for good measure, Diego Gama found the back of the net in the first minute of injury-time to make sure of the three points.
