Arema Cronus moved five points clear at the top of the Western zone in the Indonesia Super League on Sunday after claiming a 3-1 win over Sriwijaya.
Although Arema entered the clash at the Kanjuhuran Stadium as huge favourites, it was Sriwijaya who took the lead when Asri Akbar opened the scoring after 18 minutes.
However, Singo Edan pulled level five minutes after the half-hour mark when Cristian Gonzales headed home a Johan Alfarizi cross, but Gustavo Lopez then wasted a golden opportunity to fire his side into the lead just before halftime; failing to convert from the spot after Thierry Gathuessi had been fouled inside the box.
Nonetheless, the hosts eventually hit the front ten minutes into the second half when Samsul Arif blasted a shot into the top corner, before Gonzales wrapped things up in the 69th minute with his second of the evening.
Still, the match finished on an ugly note when both Gonzales and Sriwijaya defender Abdoulaye Maiga were sent off 15 minutes from time after clashing with one another.
In Sunday’s earlier game, third-placed Persib Bandung made it two wins in a row after recording a 3-0 triumph over Persik Kediri at the Si Jalak Harupat Stadium.
Following a goalless first half, the hosts broke the deadlock six minutes after the hour mark when Vladimir Vujovic coolly dispatched a penalty into the bottom corner.
Persib then doubled their advantage in the 79th minute when Ferdinand Sinaga was left unattended at the far post and nodded home a left-wing cross from a yard out.
And four minutes later, they went on to secure the win after Tony Sucipto hit the byline before floating a cross into the box, where Djibril Coulibaly proceeded to send a towering header past a stranded Sandy Firmansyah.
