Tampines Rovers missed the chance to move top of the S.League once again after being held to a 2-2 draw by Albirex Niigata (S) at the Jurong East Stadium.
The Stags, who had missed the chance to overtake leaders DPMM FC in their last outing, took the lead in the 33rd minute when Noh Alam Shah chipped the ball over the onrushing Kenjiro Ogino after being played through by Jozef Kaplan.
A minute after the hour mark, they doubled their advantage when Imran Sahib’s cross picked out Jacob Butler, who made no mistake in sending a left-footed effort into the back of the net.
But Albirex were handed a lifeline when they were awarded a penalty in the 74th minute; Kazuki Sakamoto clinically sending his spot-kick into the top corner.
And a minute from time, Sakamoto popped up again – netting his 19th league goal of the season – to earn the hosts a share of the spoils.
The result means Tampines are a point behind DPMM, who have a game in hand and play Woodlands Wellington on Tuesday evening.
Over at the Queenstown Stadium, Geylang International made it two wins in a row after beating Tanjong Pagar United 2-1.
Leonel Felice headed the Eagles into the lead after just five minutes, but Tanjong Pagar equalised in the 58th minute when Firdaus Idros turned Yuki Ichikawa before firing past Joey Sim.
However, just two minutes later, Felice lined up a freekick on the edge of the box and sent a powerful effort into the bottom corner to win it for Geylang.
