Johor Darul Ta’zim are almost through to the quarter-finals of the Malaysia Cup after recording a 5-0 win over Penang in Group C on Tuesday.
Jorge Pereyra Diaz fired Harimau Selatan ahead at the Larkin Stadium after just three minutes, before Luciano Figueroa doubled their lead from the spot on the half-hour mark.
Amri Yahyah then added a third eight minutes later to hand the hosts a commanding lead at the break, and the contest was effectively over in the 54th minute when Figueroa struck again after his side had been awarded another penalty.
Still, JDT were not done yet and completed the rout seven minutes from time when Hariss Harun found the back of the net for his first goal of the campaign.
Elsewhere in the group, ATM produced a late fightback to claim their first win after beating Kelantan 2-1 at the Sultan Mohammad IV Stadium.
The Red Warriors had taken the lead three minutes before the break through Francis Forkey Doe’s opener, but the visitors equalised in the 77th minute when Juan Arostegui beat the offside trap and made no mistake in finishing past Khairul Fahmi.
And with five minutes left on the clock, Hairuddin Omar popped up with the winner to hand his side maximum points and keep them firmly in the running to qualify for the knockout round.
The results mean Darul Ta’zim only need a point from their remaining two games to book their spot in the last eight, while the Armed Forces are now only a point behind second-placed Kelantan.
Over in Group A, Pahang overtook FELDA United at the top after recording a 2-0 win over their opponents at the Majlis Perbandaran Stadium.
Following a goalless first half, R. Gopinathan broke the deadlock for Tok Gajah in the 65th minute, before Dickson Nwakaeme sealed the win by converting a penalty in injury-time.
Over at the Jalan Besar Stadium, bottom side LIONSXII kept alive their slim hopes of advancing to the quarters with a 2-2 draw against Johor Darul Ta’zim II.
Despite taking the lead inside the opening minute when Hafiz Abu Sujad converted Khairul Nizam’s cut-back, the hosts were pegged back in the tenth minute when Yusof Zainal Abidin equalised for JDT II.
The Johor-based outfit went in front five minutes after the hour mark after Akmal Ishak headed home a cross from Shafiq Shaharudin, but in the 86th minute, Faris Ramli struck to earn the LIONSXII a share of the spoils.
