Persebaya surge ahead after Persipura suffer first loss

Persebaya Surabaya moved six points clear at the top of the Eastern zone in the Indonesia Super League after a 4-2 win over Mitra Kukar on Tuesday.

It took the Green Crocodiles just three minutes to break the deadlock at the Aji Imbut Stadium through Isaac Pupo’s opener, but Herman Dzumafo Epandi found the equaliser in the 20th minute.

However, Greg Nwokolo restored Persebaya’s lead two minutes later and it was 3-1 four minutes into the second half when Pupo struck his second of the game.

Emmanuel Kenmogne then added a fourth for the visitors four minutes later to wrap up the three points, although Epandi struck again for Mitra in the 66th minute to add more respectability to the scorelin.

The win allowed them to move six points clear of second-placed Persipura Jayapura, who fell to their first loss of the campaign after a shock 2-0 defeat at the hands of Persela Lamongan.

An own-goal from Gerald Pangkali put Persela in front at the Surajaya Stadium after just six minutes, before maximum points were wrapped up in the 26th minute after Zaenal Arifin doubled their advantage.

On Monday’ PSM Makassar had their four-game winning streak brought to a halt after they lost 2-1 to Putra Samarinda at the Segiri Stadium.

Although Ilija Spasojevic had fired the hosts in front in the 24th minute, it looked like a draw was on the cards after Syamsul Chaeruddin equalised for PSM.

But Putra Samarinda were presented a glorious opportunity in injury-time when they were awarded a penalty, and Naser Al Sebai made no mistake in converting from 12 yards to win it for them.

In Monday’s other game, Persepam Madura United and Perseru Serui played out a 1-1 draw at the Gelora Bangkalan – a result that does neither side any real favours.

Following a goalless first half, Fred Mote had put Perseru in front in the 57th minute but Diego Fretes scored from the spot 16 minutes from time to earn Persepam a share of the spoils.
