Singapore continued their preparations for the 2014 AFF Suzuki Cup on Saturday evening by recording a 2-1 friendly win over Papua New Guinea at the Hougang Stadium.
The Lions took the lead in the 17th minute through a fine individual effort by Sahil Suhaimi, who made his way past three players before firing into the back of the net.
Five minutes later, it was 2-0 after Fazrul Nawaz met Shahfiq Ghani’s cross with a first-time effort past Ronald Warisan.
Papua New Guinea did pull one back a minute after the hour mark when Raymond Gunemba scored after being set up by substitute Brad McDonald, although the hosts ultimately held out for the victory.
Meanwhile, Vietnam, who will be co-hosting the Suzuki Cup with Singapore, were also triumphant after beating Hong Kong 3-1 at the Lach Tray Stadium.
It took the hosts just two minutes to break the deadlock when Nguyen Hai Anh reacted quickest to a low cross into the box, and stabbed the ball in at the near post.
And Hai Anh, who notched 13 goals for Dong Nai in the recently-concluded V.League 1 season, added another five minues after halftime; meeting a corner with a glancing header into the back of the net.
Hong Kong managed to reduce the deficit in the 58th minute when Lam Ka Wai scored from the spot, after he had been pulled down inside the box.
But eight minutes later, Vietnam went on to make sure of the win when Le Cong Vinh was allowed to make his way to the back post unattended and nodded home a looping cross from a yard out.
