Warriors FC’s S.League title aspirations were dealt a potentially-decisive blow on Wednesday after they were handed a 1-0 defeat by Balestier Khalsa.
The Warriors entered the clash at the Choa Chu Kang Stadium with no lack of motivation, given victory would have sent them just two points behind leaders DPMM FC.
However, they were coming up against a Tigers outfit they had failed to beat in three previous games this season, and the trend continued as they struggled to break down their opponents.
They did put the ball into the back of the net in the 32nd minute after Nicolas Velez met Hafiz Rahim’s pass with a half-volley that was set to find the back of the net, only for an offside Agu Casmir to tap the ball in and cause the strike to be chalked off.
And seven minutes from time, things got worse got the Warriors as they conceded a questionable penalty; Goran Ljubojevic stepping up and converting from 12 yards to win it for Balestier.
Over at the Jalan Besar Stadium, bottom side Harimau Muda picked up only their fifth win of the campaign after beating rivals Courts Young Lions 1-0.
In a keenly-contested encounter which saw both sides create their fair share of chances, the hosts wasted a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 84th minute when Shameer Aziq was picked out unmarked inside the box but could only fire straight at Ilham Amirullah from six yards.
And in the first minute of injury-time, the visitors made the opposition pay for that miss as Nurshamil Abdul Ghani chased down a long ball on the right and hooked it into the area, where Shahrul Igwan Samsudin proceeded to plant a first-time shot into the bottom corner.
