Arema Cronus moved top of Group A in the second phase of the Indonesia Super League on Saturday after recording a 4-0 win over Persela Lamongan.
It took Arema just two minutes to edge ahead at the Kanjuruhan Stadium when Cristian Gonzales opened the scoring, before Samsul Arif doubled their lead just before the break when he converted from the penalty spot.
The contest was effectively ended in the 54th minute when Gustavo Lopez added a third for the hosts but just for good measure, Gonzales grabbed his second of the evening seven minutes after the hour mark to complete the rout.
The victory was enough to send Arema top of their group with one game remaining in the second phase, while Persela no longer have a chance of advancing to the knockout round.
Nonetheless, the battle to finish inside the top two remains keenly contested after Persipura Jayapura’s 1-0 triumph over Semen Padang sees both teams trailing Arema by a solitary point – as well as being level on their head-to-head record.
Following a goalless first half at the Mandala Stadium, the winner arrived in the 63rd minute when Boaz Solossa found the back of the net to keep his side firmly in the running.
For now, it is Semen Padang who are ahead in second place due to their superior goal difference.
The final Group A games will take place on Wednesday with Arema visiting Semen Padang, while Persipura are expected to claim maximum points in their trip to Persela.
