Army stay top of TPL; Buriram, Chonburi share spoils

Army United remain two points clear at the top of the Thai Premier League after recording a 2-0 win over Chainat at the Khao Plong Stadium on Wednesday evening.

After failing to break down their opponents for much of opening 45, Army took the lead in the first minute of first-half injury-time through an Anuwat Noichernphan strike, before Melvin de Leeuw added a second moments later to hand them a two-goal cushion they were never at risk of relinquishing.

The victory keeps them two points clear of Suphanburi and Muangthong United, who both also notched wins against Port and Sisaket respectively.

Second-half strikes from Andre Luis and Carmelo Gonzalez gave Suphanburi a 2-0 triumph at the PAT Stadium, while Cleiton Silva’s 89th-minute winner was just enough for the Twin Qilins to claim maximum points and inflict a first defeat of the season on Sisaket.

However, defending champions Buriram United’s unconvincing start to the campaign continued as they played out a 1-1 draw with Chonburi at the New I-Mobile Stadium.

Prakit Deeprom fired the Thunder Castle ahead in the 66th minute with his first league goal for them since joining from TOT, but – six minutes from time – Go Seul-ki put the ball into the back of his own net to hand Chonburi a share of the spoils.

Likewise, BEC Tero Sasana’s poor form continued as they were held to a 0-0 stalemate at the 72-years Anniversary Stadium by newly-promoted Navy, who picked up their first point of the season in the process.

Ratchaburi were the big movers on Wednesday as they climbed three spots up to fourth after Heberty netted a brace in nine first-half minutes to hand them a 2-0 triumph over Osotspa, while Bangkok Glass left it late to defeat Bangkok United 1-0; Matt Smith netting the only goal of the game in the fourth minute of injury-time.

Elsewhere, Saraburi are finally on the board as they managed to hold Chiangrai United to a 1-1 draw and end a run of four straight losses, while Nakhon Ratchasima edged TOT 2-1 courtesy of Satoshi Nagano’s 88th-minute winner.
