Loyola, Stallion overtake Global at the top of UFL

Loyola Meralco Sparks moved tp of the United Football League on Sunday evening after recording a 1-0 win over Green Archers United.

In an enthralling clash at the Rizal Memorial Stadium that saw both sides carve out their fair share of chances, it was James Younghusband who emerged as the Sparks’ hero – netting the only goal of the game in the 40th minute to hand his side maximum points.

The result, Loyola’s fifth win in six matches, was enough to send them top of the table as they claimed a two-point lead over previous leaders Global.

Stallion FC find themselves in second place and level on points with Loyola following a 2-0 victory over Philippine Army GTI in Sunday’s earlier game.

Given Army had lost all five of their previous games and had conceded 26 goals while scoring none, Stallion were expected to run riot against their opponents but curiously spent most of the outing struggling to find a way through.

Nonetheless, the deadlock was finally broken in the 87th minute when Emmanuel Mbata scored with a header, before Jordan Mintah added another in injury-time with a close-range finish to seal the win for Stallion.
