Warriors FC recorded their second successive win in the S.League on Thursday after beating Hougang United 1-0 at the Woodlands Stadium.
Following a goalless first half, the breakthrough arrived nine minutes after the hour mark when Nicolas Velez did well to skip past Lau Meng Meng and whip a dangerous cross to the far post, where Fazrul Nawaz was on hand to convert with a firm volley.
It was Fazrul’s third goal in his first two matches since returning to the club, following a brace in last Sunday’s 4-1 triumph over Home United, and it already looks as though he could play a pivotal role for his side’s title defence this season.
Nonetheless, Hougang were unfortunate not to come away with at least a point as they more than matched their opponents but were just unable to hit the target, with Shunsuke Nakatake, Nurhilmi Jasni and the tireless Chupe all spurning decent opportunities.
The result was enough to send Warriors up to second on the table behind Albirex Niigata (S) only on goal difference, while Hougang remain in eighth and are still looking for their first victory of the campaign after six outings.
